An eye specialist prescribes glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision. These vital tools are made of uniquely designed materials that protect your eyes from UV and blue light as well. To ensure the longevity of your eyeglasses and contacts, you should know how to clean them properly. If you think you have been doing it the wrong way, here are the proper approaches to cleaning your glasses and contact lenses.
Optometrists advise that the main tools you need to have in cleaning your eyeglasses are your prescribed cleaning solution, warm distilled water, and a clean microfiber cloth. Before you start cleaning your eyeglass, wash your hands first. This eliminates debris or pathogens that you may transfer to your eyeglasses.
Using your dry microfiber cloth, remove dust and other particles that could leave scratch marks on your eyeglass lenses. Run your glasses under warm, distilled water. Then, spray each side of your eyeglass lenses with a cleaning solution, then use your fingers to rub the solution on your lenses. When you’re done, shake your glasses gently to remove excess solution and water droplets. You can use a dry microfiber cloth or a gas duster to dry your glass lenses completely.
Clean your eyeglass frames the same way you clean your eyeglass lenses. Run it through warm water first and then use your fingers to rub lotion-free dishwashing soap over them. Rinse them again using warm distilled water. Use a moist towelette to clean the earpieces and the nose pads.
Using antibacterial oil-free soap and clean water, wash your hands thoroughly before touching your contact lenses. Remember not to use saliva, rewetting drops, tap water, or saline solution in cleaning your lenses. Saliva or water usually harbor pathogens. The last thing you need is a contaminated pair of contact lenses that will cause an eye infection. Using your fingers, rub the cleaning solution all over your contacts. Rinse them with the same cleaning solution. Based on research, this technique is the ideal way to clean your contacts. Be careful not to touch your lenses with your fingernails because your nails harbor pathogens and dirt.
Clean your contact lens case and lenses with a fresh cleaning solution. It is not ideal to use a stale cleaning solution because it contains debris and other contaminants. Dry your lens case thoroughly and invert it with lids off on a dry surface. Never leave them in humid areas because germs and mildew might build up. When you fill your contact lens cases again, don’t mix fresh and used cleaning solutions.
